The Cycling Tour

The tour starts from the CBD of Adelaide. Wind your way through the majestic Adelaide Hills to the tourist town of Hahndorf,climbing around 600 metres, with spectacular views back over the city and coast.

Then, on to the Barossa Valley, to spend a full day touring the iconic wineries before returning the next day on a scenic predominantly downhill run via the River Torrens Valley to Adelaide.

Itinerary

Day 1: Adelaide - Hahndorf (35km)

Level: Moderate - Difficult

Amble out of the city to the foothills before commencing the Crafers Dedicated Bikeway at the Old Tollgate. A 10km climb of around 600m to Crafers and then on through the Adelaide Hills towns of Stirling, Aldgate and Bridgewater to the final destination of Hahndorf. Spend the afternoon exploring this historic tourist town with German settler influences. Overnight: Hahndorf

Day 2: Hahndorf - Springton (65km)

Level: Moderate

Start off through the Hills countryside visiting Shaw & Smith, Nepenthe and Bird in Hand wineries, famous for cool climate varieties. Then travel on through big gum countryside to Balhannah, Oakbank, Woodside, Birdwood and Mount Pleasant. Overnight at the historic town of Springton.

Day 3: Springton - Tanunda (45km)

Level: Easy / Moderate

Spend the day riding to the centre of the Barossa Valley. On the way you pass the Collingrove Homestead and the world famous Lindsay Park Stud. Stop at Sculpture Park and take in the spectacular view of the Barossa Valley before descending Menglers Hill, a King of The Mountain stage of the Tour Down Under. If a challenge is what you are looking for, a ride back up Menglers Hill is for you. Visit Rockfords winery and taste one of our favourites, the rare Rockfords Basket Press Shiraz, followed by lunch on the veranda at Charles Melton winery. Overnight: Tanunda

Day 4: The Wine Tour (50km)

Level: Easy

Tanunda - Nuriootpa - Angaston - Tanunda This ride showcases the best that the Barossa Valley wine region has to offer: fine wines, great food and beautiful countryside. Visit Penfolds and taste a world famous "Grange" or try "Command" at Elderton. The 2004 vintage received a rating by Robert Parker Jr. of 98 points. There are so many wineries to choose from. Enjoy a picnic lunch at Peter Lehmann Winery. Ride to the historic Seppeltsfield winery; visit Maggie Beer's Produce Farm and cycle through the picturesque Barossa towns of Nuriootpa and Angaston. Overnight: Tanunda

Day 5: Tanunda - Adelaide (80km)

Level: Moderate

Predominantly downhill, you wander back to the city of Adelaide along a picturesque route through Lyndoch and Williamstown leaving the Barossa Valley and then through Kersbrook. Wind your way past the Millbrook Reservoir through the Hill's town of Inglewood and the outer suburb of Tea Tree Gully where you join the Torrens River Linear Park Bikeway which takes you to the centre of the city.
